SEVENTEEN

Tama runs to Kiri and grabs her around the shoulders, pulling her into him and shielding her from Bob’s camera, then speaks fervently into her ear. She nods against his shoulder, frantic. He grabs her face in his hands and guides her gaze around and up until she is looking at him. They lock eyes as he mutters something to her. She nods again.

Bob whips the camera around and does a frenzied pan across the beach, searching for what has spooked Kiri. I’m not sure what Bob thinks he’ll see. Oliver is obviously dead and not hanging out on the beach watching his wife surf.

Kiri is silent now as Tama holds her close. She’s shaking as if freezing cold, even though it’s at least ninety degrees out here. She stares out toward the boardwalk over Tama’s shoulder watching something happen that only she can see.

Dylan takes this opportunity to cross in front of them and block Bob’s camera. He gives Bob a stern look and a small head-shake as if to say, Don’t you dare, and Bob lowers his camera to his side. I follow behind Dylan as he ushers Tama and Kiri away from the crowd and cameras with his arms around them both like a protective parent. He glances back at me beseechingly, not sure what to do next.

“Arcade office,” I offer. “They’ll have some privacy there.” Plus, Dylan will be able to ask whatever questions he wants. And I’ll be there to listen in.

We cross the beach with Tama shielding Kiri and Dylan doing his best to shield both of them. We ignore the shouts of the crowd and the media shuffling through the sand behind us. With a twinge of annoyance, I notice that Bob has already started rolling again. Once we get across the boardwalk, the crowds and calls fade out as we step into the relative calm of the arcade.

Dylan leads Tama and Kiri up the metal stairs to my office. I shut the door, and the room grows deathly quiet.

Kiri’s breath comes in jerky dry sobs like she’s trying to calm down, and Tama pulls her in close to his shoulder. He mutters to her in a language I can’t understand. She nods, then shakes her head, then nods. He pulls her closer and her breathing calms and slows until they are breathing as one, totally in sync with one another. If I didn’t think these two might be cold-blooded murderers, I would find this moment almost toothache-inducingly sweet.

Tama motions to my desk chair and helps Kiri to sit down, then stands behind her, resting his hands on her shoulders reassuringly.

“So, Kiri. Can you tell me what happened out there?” Dylan asks gently, looking from Kiri to Tama and back to Kiri. Imploring one of them to answer the question.

“I saw… Oliver,” Kiri says between jerky chest spasms.

Tama squeezes her shoulders almost imperceptibly. If I hadn’t been looking right at his hands, I would have missed it.

“I thought I saw him, I mean,” she corrects herself.
